Musical Monday #62

Welcome to the 62nd edition of Musical Monday, the weekly quiz that Soccer Dad and I alternate hosting. As always, the challenge is to identify the title and artist of each song quote, as well as the common theme of the set of songs. But before I get to the quotes themselves, a couple of notes relating to this and upcoming MMs:

First, you'll note that this MM is extra-long, containing a full 62 songs to match the edition number. This number has no additional significance in relation to the theme, and despite the number of entries, there is a single uniform theme this week. But I'd also like to say that this edition of MM involved the most effort/research of any I've put together to date, and not only because of its length. Hopefully all the songs should be relatively guessable, though you might find the last half dozen or so a bit harder than the rest. Hope my extra work pays off in terms of both your enjoyment and success rate!

Secondly, though a number of the songs below have been recorded by more than one artist, I will confirm that in all cases I am looking for one particular version of the song. It will generally be either the original and/or the most well-known version, but I don't guarantee this and, unfortunately, can't (won't!) say any more on an individual song basis.

Finally, my MM partner Soccer Dad and I note that due to the upcoming Jewish holidays, MM will be published on a bi-weekly basis for the next couple of editions. This, #63 should appear at Soccer Dad on Monday 10/6, and #64 back here on Monday 10/20, after which the regular weekly schedule should resume.

Without further ado:

1) "Well, my heart went 'boom'"
2) "Only took a couple of days 'til she was rid of me"

Hmm, is each song the first track on the debut album of the respective group or solo artist?

trn, I think you might have it. I know Keep Yourself Alive is the first track of Queen's first album, I know Welcome to the Jungle is GnR's first track, and of the rest, I don't know, but thinking about the artists/groups, it seems like in every case the song was released early in their career.

First of all, when Elie e-mailed that this MM was taking a lot of research, I didn't know what he meant. But this is really impressive. I could never be this ambitious.

TRN, great job on figuring it out.

Everyone, else as someone who's been Elie's friend for 30 years, let me give you some hints of who else to look for:
Billy Joel. Now I don't know if the song would be from Cold Spring Harbor or Piano Man, but there should a Billy Joel song there.

I'd also expect a Linda Ronstadt song.

I imagine he'd also include Kansas and Styx. For more on his favorite acts see here.

So if you know the first album of any of the 50 acts he cited here and you haven't found them in the list above, start thinking of the songs.

One final idea: I expect that Hero Takes a fall by the Bangles is in there someplace too.

I can't guarantee that any of the above is accurate, but since the theme's been figured out, knowing a little more about Elie could help us figure the rest out.

Unless I've missed it, I don't think that Hero Takes a Fall is among the remaining songs.

That's a good move, Elie, to try to help us with the remaining ones like that at this point. Unfortunately, I don't think I can place any of them.

#61 keeps reminding me of a line from a different song. #29 . . . couldn't be Ain't Too Proud to Beg, could it?

Soccer Dad, what a nice comment earlier. Thank you of course for the kind words you directed towards me. What I found especially nice was how both the importance and your appreciation of your long-time friendship with Elie came through in your comment.

And yes, this is indeed an impressive Musical Monday. Well done, Elie!

Great job and many thanks to Soccer Dad, Clayton, ral315, TRN, Laura, and Yitzchak!! Collectively, you broke last month's records for both Musical Monday percentage correct, with 48 out of 62 (BTW, I missed listing #44 above in the final list I gave hints for - sorry!), as well as the blog's all-time comments record, with this one being #59 and counting! Special kudos to TRN for puzzling out the theme, which indeed was first tracks off first albums. Certainly a timely theme for this final MM before the first of the new Jewish year.

As I indicated above in my preface to the post, this MM definitely required significantly more work and research than usual. Due to the nature of the theme, I had to forego many of my favorite and/or other big-name artists – Styx, ELO, Kansas, The Who, The Stones, and even the generally ubiquitous Fleetwood Mac - simply because their first songs were far too obscure to be fair game. To qualify, the song in question had to have been released as a single, or at least one that became reasonably well-known over time. I would conservatively estimate that for every band I did use, there were two others that I looked at and decided I couldn’t. Conversely, I had to step outside my familiarity/comfort zone for a few of these - e.g., #50, #54.

I also avoided any one-hit or even one-album wonders, to ensure that "first song, first album" was never simply true by default. Finally, I skipped cases where the first song by artist A was a remake too closely associated with artist B (#15 and perhaps #44 are close calls on that last count). I did learn a lot through the process – e.g., did you know that Rod Stewart's first song was the Rolling Stones "Street Fighting Man"?

Once again, thanks for all your great participation – it genuinely made me feel that the extra work was well worth it!

I'm glad you explained your eligibility requirements, Elie. They were stricter than I had imagined, though I did wonder about the obscurity issue. Now I appreciate your tremendous effort with this edition even more than I already did!

Thank you for the special kudos. I am glad others were able to confirm.

It truly is amazing how the lyrics come to life once paired with the correct song identification.

Riffing on your theme, may this new year start off well, continue well through the year, and be followed by many more good years, for all of us.
