Musical Monday #58

Welcome to the 58th edition of Musical Monday, the weekly quiz that Soccer Dad and I alternate hosting. As always, the challenge is to identify the title and artist of each song quote, as well as the common theme of the set of songs.

Today's edition is being posted just as the Rosenfeld clan leaves for a week's vacation, which will likely involve lack of internet connectivity for at least the first few days. So as that SNL character used to say: talk amongst yourselves, discuss, discuss! But here's a parting hint: you may quickly determine a possible theme, but look for something just a little more specific.

1) "I never had no money, I bought at the second hand store"
2) "Come back and make me your wife"
3) "If you believe in the power of magic"
4) "Miracle of miracles, look what the night dragged in"
5) "All the servants in your new hotel"
6) "I really love you baby, cross my heart"
7) "I'll let you know when she's come home; until that day"
8) "You got me crawling up to you everyday"
9) "Without no bridges she's trapped, so I sigh"
10) "Talk to me softly, there is something in your eyes"
11) "There was nothing left but sawdust and some glitter"
12) "I've given up, stop, you tangle my emotions"
13) "So you know you better watch your step"
14) "Nor do the wind, the sun or the rain"
15) "I might be great tomorrow, but hopeless yesterday"
16) "I've changed my face, I've changed my name"
17) "When I was down, I was your clown"
18) "I can't exist, I'll surely miss your tender kiss"
19) "What can I do, pictures of you still make me cry"
20) "And if it hurts when they mention my name"
21) "Oh baby, don't you know I'm human?"
22) "And if somebody loved me like she do me"
23) "I'd just allow a fragment of your life to wander free"
24) "I'm much too strong not to compromise"
25) "You were in a car crash and you lost your hair"
26) "Beware that hooded old man at the rudder"
27) "I'll just lay me down and cry for a hundred years"
28) "His car is warm and dry"
29) "It'll be, better than before"
30) "For a smile they can share the night"
31) "I'm a racing car passing by like Lady Godiva"
32) "Power (ah power) is the force the vow"
33) "You're seeing some slick Continental dude"
34) "We can take the darkness and make if full of light"
35) "When I started to brag about my car"
36) "Ain't got not cash, ain't got no style"
37) "Slow change may pull us apart"
38) "Cause I'll be standing on the side when you check it out"
39) "You got that sand all over your feet"
40) "He's a pool-shootin' son of a gun"

Good luck and enjoy!

8) Don't Bring me Down - ELO

27) Don't pull you're love out - Hamilton, Joe, Frank and Reynolds.

What was their Record Label?

There's another Beatles song that's got to be in here, I'll leave it to Laura. I've got both cubes.

I'm taking a wild guess here. I'm not familiar with the lyrics of the song but figure that it's included here. And these words fit the title.

11) Don't cry out loud - Crystal Gayle

Another guess, a little less wild than the last one. Don't cry out loud had a circus theme.

Honey Don't would be #2.

Don't let me down would be #3.

I'm waiting for Laura to sort them out.

If it's a Beatles song Laura knows it. Though you beat her on Magical Mystery Tour (I think) last week.

Not only do the titles contain the contraction "don't," but also so far they all -- with the possible exception of the last song -- use "don't" only in an imperative context, commanding what not to do. (Each title is a negative mitzvah?)

Yes, exactly.

trn, I just realized,

33 is Don't you want me? by the Human League.

so it also can be in the form of a question.

Ah, well then.

Besides as an imperative commanding the second person, "don't" can be used in the indicative with all but the singular third person in either a statement or a question, and is also at times used in an informal fashion with the singular third person in place of the correct "doesn't" in both statements and questions.

Another non-imperative title is You Don't Bring Me Flowers.

Actually now I think that 16, is Don't you want me? not 33.

I'm so confused.

36 -
37 - Dont You Forget About Me - Simple Minds

It appears that most of them are in roughly alphabetical order by the first word after "don't". Perhaps that will help fill in the blanks.

Is "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" there? I don't know the song well enough to recognize it, if it is.

Once again, wow! Tremendous job, Gail, Soccer Dad, Clayton, Yitzchak, Laura, TRN, and Ral315! You ended up with by far the best MM results yet, correctly identifying a full 80% of the songs, or 32 out of 40! As you also jointly determined, the theme was songs that tell you not to do something (specifically, as opposed to other uses of the word "don't"). No special relevance, though historically, the last state to repeal Prohibition - our big "don't" of the Roaring 20s - did so 64 years ago this month.

Though you scarcely need it, here is the complete list of correct responses:

1) "I never had no money, I bought at the second hand store"
- "Baby Don't Go", Sonny & Cher
2) "Come back and make me your wife"
- "Billy Don't Be A Hero", Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods / Paper Lace
3) "If you believe in the power of magic"
- "Don't Answer Me", The Alan Parsons Project
4) "Miracle of miracles, look what the night dragged in"
- "Don't Ask Me Why", Eurythmics
5) "All the servants in your new hotel"
- "Don't Ask Me Why", Billy Joel
6) "I really love you baby, cross my heart"
- "Don't Be Cruel", Elvis Presley
7) "I'll let you know when she's come home; until that day…"
- "Don't Bother Me", The Beatles
8) "You got me crawling up to you everyday"
- "Don't Bring Me Down", Electric Light Orchestra
9) "Without no bridges she's trapped, so I sigh"
- "Don't Cross The River", America
10) "Talk to me softly, there is something in your eyes"
- "Don't Cry", Guns N' Roses
11) "There was nothing left but sawdust and some glitter"
- "Don't Cry Out Loud", Melissa Manchester is the version I know, but I guess also covered by Crystal Gayle
12) "I've given up, stop, you tangle my emotions"
- "Don't Come Around Here No More", Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
13) "So you know you better watch your step"
- "Don't Do Me Like That", - Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
14) "Nor do the wind, the sun or the rain"
- "Don't Fear The Reaper", Blue Oyster Cult
15) "I might be great tomorrow, but hopeless yesterday"
- "Don't Get Me Wrong", The Pretenders
16) "I've changed my face, I've changed my name"

Boats Sail On The Rivers

(1)

Boats sail on the rivers,

And ships sail on the seas;

But clouds that sail across the sky,

Are prettier far than these.

(2)

There are bridges on the rivers,

As pretty as you please;

But the bow that bridges heaven,

And overtops the trees,

And builds a road from earth to sky,

Is prettier far than these.
