Musical Monday #100!

Welcome to the 100th edition of Musical Monday, the weekly quiz that Soccer Dad and I alternate hosting. Our usual challenge is for you to identify the title and artist of each song quote, as well as the common theme of the entire set of songs. However, your MM co-authors are running a special, two-part theme in honor of MM's centennial, and thus, those who have been participating in MM #99 at Soccer Dad's blog already know today's theme (and if you haven't been participating, there's still a few songs left to get on #99, so get over there pronto, then come back!). So as an extra-credit assignment today, please share your favorite couple of past MMs from each of the two host blogs!

Before getting to today's quotes, I'd like to add my thanks to Soccer Dad's for our regular players - Clayton, Laura, TRN, Yitzchak, Gail, ral315, Benjie, and SJ - and for all of the occasional participants as well. It's always fun putting these puzzles together, but a lot more fun watching you solve them each week! And of course, my most heartfelt gratitude to my friend of now 30+ years, David aka Soccer Dad, who offered me the chance to share the weekly hosting of this terrific game, starting way back with MM#6!

Just a quick note on the song groups below: My implementation of the theme is just slightly different than David's: the first song in each set will be the one which connects to each of the others.

Without further ado!

37 is probably titled Midnight. It would have been included in the Midnight edition of Musical Monday.

68 sounds like the vocalizations in the line "That's the way (ah-huh ah-huh) I like it (ah-huh ah-huh).

Okay, 41 is The Doors, but I don't know which song.

The full line is "I'm gonna love you/Till the heavens stop the rain."

I had recognized this as The Doors but couldn't place it in its song, so had originally just been going to write "The Doors" in my list. I guess I should have left it that way.

I think it continues "I'm gonna love you/Till the stars fall from the sky/For you and I."

I think that I'm understanding the difference in this week's implementation better now.

What I said previously about 37 is probably wrong.

It seems instead that both 36 and 37 would contain the words "After" and "Midnight."

One song from Musical Monday 89 fits this: Livin' After Midnight by Judas Priest.

There's also the "I go out walking after midnight" song. Is that the title? Is it by Johnny Cash?

My guess is the former is 36 and the latter is 37.

The one remaining unidentified in the "That's the Way" group, 69, could be the "That's just the way it is" song.

Is that the title? It would seem listed out of order within the group if it is, so maybe that isn't the right song.

The part I recall right now goes something like "That's just the way it is/Some things will never change." The singer is male.

On TRN's last item (4:52 pm): The song you have in mind is by Bruce Hornsby and is titled "The Way It Is" - without the "That's" in the title. So it doesn't *quite* make the cut for this group!

No further clues yet, you're all doing so well without 'em!

Thanks for the update, Clayton.

11) So Yitzchak guessed this is Mona Lisa. Now, RAL confirms and provides the artist. Cool.

15) I offered the possibility that this is Faith by George Michael. Can anyone confirm?

26) With Staying Afloat's identification of 25 as Never Say Goodbye, we now have a clue about the title (probably Say Goodbye) of 26, the other one in that group.

37) I guessed this is I Go Out Walking After Midnight, perhaps by Johnny Cash. Can anyone confirm, with the correct title and artist?

44-45) With Anonymous's identification of 46 as Country Roads, we now have a clue about the titles of 44 and 45, the first two in that group of three. But is Country Roads the full title of this song?

54) Yitzchak had thought this might be It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) by Bob Dylan, but that doesn't work as part of the "I Want You" group. Is there another Bob Dylan song with a title that fits? Yitzchak, you recognized the lyric in some way, so does the clue of what the title might be (I Want You, or maybe Want You or I Want) add anything to that recognition? (I had originally thought it sounded like Simon & Garfunkel, but have no specific ideas.)

59) The title probably contains "So Long." The idea of sending a salami in a song with such a title causes me to think this is a song from the perspective of a boy going off to war.

79) It seems that the proper title of this song is Have I Told You Lately, so, if that is correct, it doesn't officially fit here. Apparently, however, there is a 1945 song with the actual title Have I Told You Lately That I Love You.

Also, groups for which we have no identifications yet at all to even get things started are 3-4, 9-10, and 21-22.

At 7/7/09, 1:15 PM, Blogger trn said...

Aw, darn.

Oh, weird. How did it take me this long to realize that of course 15 wouldn't be Faith? I had figured out and been working with the understanding that the first song in each group would have a title of more than one word, that these are titles with shared phrases or sets of words and not just single words as we often have as a theme, yet I somehow hadn't reconciled that with my approach to 15.

Oops.

Time for a few hints on the remaining ones:

First, to confirm TRN's surmise above, there are no songs with one-word titles.

Song #10 also appeared in my previous MM.

Songs #37 and #58 are both by the same group - definitely in the "Pop" vs. "Rock" category

Song #59 is neither pop nor rock, but would have fit my last Purim edition.

My bonus alternate for 32 was "Do it any way you wanna" by People's Choice. The title is also the complete lyrics, but that doesn't quite convey how repetitious the "song" is.
