Vaeschanan Quotes - My Answers

Thanks to David and Shira for your responses to my Vaeschanan Quotes Quiz, where I asked for the verses from last week's parshah that are found in the davening or elsewhere in the liturgy. You each got one of the correct answers. The following are the ten total that my sons are I were able to find this time around. I suspect there may be one or two others; it seems like each year we find a slightly different solution! Wish Dad was around to give me the complete list (well, wish he was around for lots of other reasons too...)

So, here goes, verse by verse, along with where each one is found in the liturgy:

1) 4:4 "Vi'atem Hadiveykim...": Said by congregation after the first oleh to the Torah is called up. Also found near the end of the chazzan's repetition of musaf on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, right before the "Hayom Ti'amtzeynu" recitation.

2) 4:29 "Uvikashtem Misham...": Part of the Selichos recited on fast days and from several days before Rosh Hashanah through Yom Kippur, in the "Zachor" section of biblical quotes which precedes the "S'hma Ko'aleynu" recitation.

3) 4:31 "Ki Keil Rachum...": Also part of Selichos, in same section.

4) 4:34 "O Hanissa Elokim...": In the Haggadah, Maggid section, a page or so before the 10 plagues.

5) 4:35 "Atah Horeysa...": Recited before taking out the Torah on Simchas Torah in Nusach Askenaz, and on all Shabbosim and Yom Tovim in Nusach Sefard.

6) 4:39 "Viyadata Hayom...": Found at the end of the first section of Aleynu, which is said at the end of every prayer service.

7) 4:44 "Vizos Hatorah...": Recited by the congregation when the Torah scroll is lifted up for "hagbah".

8) 6:4-9 "S'hma Yisroel...": Recited twice daily, as well as before retiring every night. But you knew that already! :-)

9) 6:20 "...Mah Ha'eydus...": In the Haggadah, the question of the Wise Son.

10) 6:21 "...Avadim Hayinu...": In the Haggadah, the very beginning of the Maggid section.

Note, the repetition of the Aseres Hadibros in this parshah (5:6-19) as far as I know did not get incorporated anywhere in the liturgy. Kiddush on Shabbos morning does include verses from the original Aseres Hadibros (Exodus ch 20).
