Sports Sidetrack

"Life is tough but it's just enough
To hold back the tears until it's closing time"
- Billy Joel, "Close to the Borderline"

With the terrible events in Israel I find myself at a loss for adequate words - even more so than I've generally been during my past couple of weeks of blog-lassitude. But I do know more than most the value - the necessity - of distraction at the bad times. So for your diversion du jour, here's a sports question that is, if not suitably sombre, at least somewhat timely:

What is unique about this past Monday and Wednesday in terms of the annual US sports calendar?

Answers tomorrow, if nobody guesses.

No games in major sports scheduled.

That's right. Baseball is the only one of the four major US sports (baseball, football, basketball, hockey) that, for at least part of its season, doesn't overlap with any of the others. Thus, the day before and after baseball's All-Star game are the only days in the year when none of the big four are played.

Or for that matter, the home run derby. But neither counts as a game.

Of course I was at the Quiddich World Cup on Monday - you think I would miss that? But my question was about US sports. If I recall correctly, the US hasn't made the QWC finals for 276 years, when the Salem Sorcerers were crushed by Prussia, 210-30. Of course, that was pre 7/4/1776, so technically the US has never made the QWC finals.

Just another bit of meaningless (or is it mendacious?) sports trivia!
