Musical Monday 24

Welcome to the 24th edition of Musical Monday, the weekly quiz that Soccer Dad and I alternate hosting. For each numbered song quote below, identify the title and artist, as well as the common theme of the set of songs. Today, there are actually four sub-themes, identified by breaks between groups of songs. Taken together, the sub-themes point to an overall theme.

1) "I might have to move heaven and earth to prove it to you, baby"
2) "I was afraid that God would frown"
3) "On a crystal morning I can see the dewdrops falling"

4) "Loneliness was tough; the toughest role you ever played"
5) "But you're my teenage queen (you're my queen)"
6) "Something there outside says we're only in the hands of time falling slowly"

7) "Your kisses lift me higher, like the sweet song of a choir"
8) "Seems our freedom's up against the ropes"
9) "Home isn't my way, home will never be"
10) "The time has come to say fair's fair"
11) "Living in the parish of the restless folks I know"

12) "And your mind, your tiny mind, you know you've really been so blind"
13) "My nerves all jumping, acting like a fool"
14) "And a freight train running through the middle of my head"
15) "You've got what it takes to make a poor man's heart break"
16) "You got every advantage when they put out the lights"
17) "Rockefeller, Campanella, Communist Bloc"
18) "Try now we can only lose"
19) "I learned to love all of Hollywood money"
20) "I'm miles away, I want to cry out loud"
21) "Rules and regulations have no meaning anymore"

Enjoy and good luck!

13) Fire. Pointer Sisters/Bruce (that's a guess)
14) I'm on fire. Bruce.
17) You should know that one.
We didn't start the fire. Billy Joel.
Why'd you have to ask us? :-)

I was going to add a song, but when I looked up the lyrics, it turned out that it was #12.
Funny but when there was a Washington Classic Rock station 20 some years ago, they must have played that song every day for a week. I guess when they started out they must have had a pretty small record library.
I tried a second song and it turned out it was #7. I really must not know what I'm listening to!

5) 16 candles

And here's a lyric from a song that I'm surprised doesn't appear to be here:

a) Been walkin' my mind to an easy time

Yes, should have included that one!

I like how we have to identify at least a few songs to then be able to figure out what the theme is, but then once the theme is determined, it works as a hint to assist with the remaining lines.

The ones I originally recognized had already been identified, but then Gail's identification of #1 indicated the sub-theme for the first group, for which I then realized an obvious candidate. Sure enough, #2 is Miracle of Miracles from Fiddler on the Roof. Does the tailor sing that line?

Soccer Dad's lyric is from James Taylor's Fire and Rain, a heartbreaking song that also would have fit the autobiographical theme (Musical Monday 20).

WOW, TRN thanks for those nice words! My goal is for the MM quizzes to work just as you describe - the songs helping you get the theme(s), and then vice versa.

Great job, Jack, Yitzchak, Soccer Dad, Gail, Lel, and TRN! Together, you correctly identified a majority (11/21) of the songs. The four sub-themes, "Miracle", "Candles", "Burning", "Fire", when taken together, pointed out the overall theme of Chanukah - kind of obvious I guess!

Here are the full set of responses:

1) "I might have to move heaven and earth to prove it to you, baby"
- Jefferson Airplane, "Miracles"
2) "I was afraid that God would frown"
- Fiddler on the Roof, "Miracle of Miracles"
3) "On a crystal morning I can see the dewdrops falling"
- Kansas, "Miracles Out of Nowhere" (OK, I knew nobody would conceivably recognize this lyric, but though obscure, it's one of my very favorite songs and I couldn't resist!)

4) "Loneliness was tough; the toughest role you ever played"
- Elton John, "Candle In The Wind"
5) "But you're my teenage queen (you're my queen)"
- The Platters, "Sixteen Candles"
6) "Something there outside says we're only in the hands of time falling slowly"
- Moody Blues, "Candle of Life"

7) "Your kisses lift me higher, like the sweet song of a choir"
- Elvis Presley, "Burning Love"
8) "Seems our freedom's up against the ropes"
- Survivor, "Burning Heart"
9) "Home isn't my way, home will never be"
- Blue Oyster Cult, "Burning For You"
10) "The time has come to say fair's fair"
- Midnight Oil, "Beds Are Burning"
11) "Living in the parish of the restless folks I know"
- Elton John, "Burn Down the Mission"

12) "And your mind, your tiny mind, you know you've really been so blind"
– The Crazy World of Arthur Brown / ELP, "Fire"
13) "My nerves all jumping, acting like a fool"
- Pointer Sisters, "Fire"
14) "And a freight train running through the middle of my head"
- Bruce Springsteen (who also wrote the previous song), "I'm On Fire"
15) "You've got what it takes to make a poor man's heart break"
- Free, "Fire and Water"
16) "You got every advantage when they put out the lights"
- Pat Benatar, "Fire and Ice"
17) "Rockefeller, Campanella, Communist Bloc"
- Billy Joel, "We Didn't Start the Fire"
18) "Try now we can only lose"
- Doors, "Light My Fire"
19) "I learned to love all of Hollywood money"
- Jerry Lee Lewis, "Great Balls of Fire"
20) "I'm miles away I want to cry out loud"
- Kansas, "Fight Fire With Fire"
21) "Rules and regulations have no meaning anymore"
- John Cafferty, "Hearts on Fire" (yes! two, count em two songs from Rocky IV! Draaagoooooo!!)

Look for the next MM this Monday 12/19 at Soccer Dad, with the 12/26 edition back here.
