Musical Monday #159

Welcome to the 159th edition of Musical Monday, the weekly quiz that Soccer Dad and I alternate hosting. As always, the challenge is to identify the title and artist of each song quote below, as well as the common theme of the entire set of songs.

There's a single theme this week, but the last four songs relate to it in a significantly different way than the rest. And again, sorry for being a day late, not to mention probably a few songs short, but here goes!

1) "And my LP records and they're all scratched"
2) "Put a frog down my back at the Carroll County picture show"
3) "Left standing in the lurch, at a church"
4) "He freely gave to charity"
5) "That's what Mrs. Riordan said"
6) "Frameless heads on nameless walls"
7) "Lemon yellow sun, arms raised in a V"
8) "The worm he licks my bone"
9) "Through early morning fog I see, visions of the things to be"
10) "I don't care to know the hour, 'cause it's passing anyway"
11) "Hard to save money, when you're twenty years in debt"
12) "And the clocks waits so patiently on your song"
13) "Wine is fine but whiskey's quicker"
14) "Like the burning end of a midnight cigarette"
15) "Getting lost within myself, nothing matters no one else"
16) "Drying up in conversation, you will be the one who cannot talk"
17) "You could cut ties with all the lies"
18) "So take your lies, get off my case"
19) "I felt the earth on Monday, it moved beneath my feet"
20) "And my last ditch, was my last brick"
21) "I started a landslide in my ego"
22) "A rift in my family, I can't use the car"
23) "She has trouble acting normal when she's nervous"
24) "Now she's a swinger, dating a singer"
25) "I need a lawyer for my medical bills"
26) "Get your carpetbaggers off my back"

27) "Wait in your corner until that breeze blows in"
28) "Don't throw your hand, oh no, don't throw your hand"
29) "But we all bleed the same way as you do"
30) "Need some affection - you got it!"

Good luck and enjoy!

Some are familiar, yet I can neither place nor "hear" any of them. I'll keep trying.

Cheery stuff.

4) I think is Richard Corey by Simon and Garfunkel
5) I think is A most peculiar Man by Simon and Garfunkel.
Both from the Sounds of Silence album.

With thanks to Soccer Dad for a suggestion of what the theme might be:

Could 9 be Suicide is Painless, from M*A*S*H?

8. Yer Blues--Beatles

27 - You're Only Human (Second Wind) - Billy Joel

If the overall theme is about being down, maybe the last 4 are about cheering back up?

In light of on trn's guess about 9, a possible bonus:

17 has the refrain "Why don't you step off of that ledge, my friend?" Not sure of the title or artist, though.

SoccerDad emailed me with the name of #2 - "Ode to Billy Joe." Still not sure who sang it though.

"Ode to Billy Joe" is by Bobbie Gentry, I think.

A high school friend used to sing me some novelty song on the topic that is the theme for this edition. I recall a refrain that went something like, "Leave the bathroom just as you found it, for others are following you."

TRN, That's as sensitive and caring as SJ's quote above, "Why don't you step off of that ledge, my friend?"

6. Starry Night or Vincent by Don McLean

I checked my copy. The proper title is the latter of the two Yitzchak suggests.

If the overall theme is about being down, maybe the last 4 are about cheering back up?

Clayton is on to something; looks like the last four are songs that are supportive. They must, however, be supportive in a specific way, otherwise Lean on Me and You've Got a Friend would be included.

As TRN noted, 159b1 also appeared in MM #158. I'm amazed no one's gotten this. There are (at least) two well known versions of the song. The original was by a man (who also wrote the song), but I don't think it was released as a single. The cover, by a woman made it to the top 40.
159b4 is one of the sickest songs I'm aware of. I have it on an anthology CD and really don't like to listen to it. After that you might be surprised to learn that - it was featured in the movie E.T.

Thanks all! Extremely overdue solution to follow:

Theme: Suicide. Note: The choice of this grim theme was not only the event
at Rutgers (which is down the block from me) that past week, but also a tragedy that occurred in my workplace a few weeks earlier.

The first group are songs about suicide, the second group songs specifically written with anti-suicide themes.

1) "And my LP records and they're all scratched" - "Can't Stand Losing You", The Police
2) "Put a frog down my back at the Carroll County picture show" - "Ode to Billie Joe", Bobbie Gentry

6) "Frameless heads on nameless walls" - "Vincent", Don McLean
7) "Lemon yellow sun, arms raised in a V" - "Jeremy", Pearl Jam
8) "The worm he licks my bone" - "Yer Blues", Beatles
9) "Through early morning fog I see, visions of the things to be" - "Suicide Is Painless (M*A*S*H Theme)", Johnny Mandel and Mike Altman
10) "I don't care to know the hour, 'cause it's passing anyway" - "Tomorrow Is Today", Billy Joel - lyrics are from the text of his own suicide note from 1972!
11) "Hard to save money, when you're twenty years in debt" - "Shotgun Blues", The Blues Brothers
12) "And the clocks waits so patiently on your song" - "Rock 'n' Roll Suicide", David Bowie
13) "Wine is fine but whiskey's quicker" - "Suicide Solution", Ozzy Osbourne
