Musical Monday #157
Welcome to the 157th edition of Musical Monday, the weekly quiz that Soccer Dad and I alternate hosting. As always, the challenge is to identify the title and artist of each song quote below, as well as the common theme of the entire set of songs.
There are four separate song groups, each of which contributes differently to the theme. Despite an extra week off, as unfortunately that week didn't include much free time for me, this is a somewhat slimmer edition than average. Hopefully it will still present some challenge - more likely in the individual songs than the theme(s).
1) "We gonna do what they say can't be done"
2) "Put your faith in a miracle, and it's non-denominational"
3) "It was New Cross Station, I was going on home"
4) "There are giants out there in the canyons"
5) "I get the same old dream same time every night"
6) "Why do the white gulls call?"
7) "She lived all alone in Liddley Lane at number 22"
8) "Together we will love the beach, together we will learn and teach"
9) "I'll pretend my ship's not sinking"
10) "Over and over again, you're a fool-hearted man"
11) "Hundreds of flowers in full bloom, hundreds of people in each room"
12) "You may think the bands are not quite right"
13) "The iron ore poured, as the years passed the door"
14) "With George Pratt, his partner, and brother, Billy, too"
15) "Now the weight of intention carried the motion"
16) "Learned how to cry too young, so now I live to sing"
17) "Let’s show them Canada still cares"
18) "Got your hands full now, baby, oh as soon as I hit the door"
19) "And a little bit of raving madness"
20) "Tall white mansions and little shacks"
21) "Off the wind on this heading lie the Marquesas"
22) "Gonna make some front page news"
23) "Well I'm blue-collar branded and stuck in a mill"
24) "Free as a breeze, not to mention the trees"
25) "You sure have saved this man whose soul was in need"
26) "Out of self respect, I'm out of bread"
27) "But the days of our youth were numbered"
28) "Were we ever colder on that day?"
29) "First there came four pretty daughters"
30) "Elvin Bishop sittin' on a bale of hay"
Good luck and enjoy!
32 Comments:
1 - East Bound and Down - Jerry Reed
4 - The Downeaster 'Alexa' - Billy Joel
21 - Southern Cross - Crosby, Stills & Nash
26 - It Never Rains in Southern California - Albert Hammond
30 - The South's Gonna Do It Again - The Charlie Daniels Band
Do we have some direction home regarding what the theme is? :-)
The only one I recognize right now has already been identified. (I once heard 26 in Spanish too. Albert Hammond, I think, is Mexican and recorded the song in both English and Spanish.)
I think that 14 is a Johnny Horton song, but I'm not certain.
Looks like the order is East, West, North, South.
Isn't there a Neil Young song that would fit?
"I think that 14 is a Johnny Horton song, but I'm not certain."
North to Alaska, perhaps? :)
There's a song called Southland in the Springtime, isn't there?
Also, shanah tovah, everyone!
TRN - that could be Southern Man.
I'm guessing that 23 is Song of the South by Alabama.
Now I'm thinking of South Pacific.
A song from Musical Monday 153 would fit twice.
22 is frustrating because it's close to lyrics from "Night Moves" which obviously doesn't belong here. But it makes it hard to think past "front page drive-in news."
9 - King of Wishful Thinking - Go West?
20 - Southern Man - Neil Young - with credit to trn and Soccer Dad for the hints
Also, trn, there is a song called "Southland in the Springtime" by the Indigo Girls. I don't know it well enough to recognize if it's here, though.
28 "South side of the sky" (I think that's the title) by Yes
30 Elivin Bishop played on "East-West," which I think of as an instrumental, but it fits the theme. Is there some spoken banter introducing his solo?
Is 12 Life in a northern town?
Is 12 "Only a Northern Song" by the Beatles?
A bonus: "O the sun was in their eyes"
12.Only a Northern Song-The Beatles
It's neat that even with knowing the theme this edition is quite challenging. The lyrics are more difficult to place this time, and it's hard to even come up with songs that are possibly included! And of course I always like it when we work together to make identifications. A good edition, Elie.
24 southern nights - glen campbell
25 - South City Midnight Lady - The Doobie Brothers
I keep coming up with titles that would be eligible only to realize they are book, film, Broadway show titles, not song titles.
I see Clayton ID'd 30. Never mind my speculation. Also, isn't there a song called "It never rains in southern California"?
Is "West End Girls" by the Pet Shop Boys in there somewhere?
How about Central Park 'n West by Ian Hunter? Maybe #11?
There's a parody of Born in the U.S.A. called Born in East L.A.
TRN,
Wasn't that by Cheech and Chong?
Soccer Dad,
Thought it was Tommy Chong, but perhaps it was the two of them together.
Interesting article,
GMAR CHATIMA TOVA!
Great job so far, guys! You not only got many of the songs, but thought of several I missed. Specifcially, none of the following are here: Southland in the Springtime, Central Park 'n West, Born in East L.A, or anything from South Pacific - although I do have a song from *another* musical which fits the theme!
But West End Girls and Life in a Northern Town are here, so keep looking! Some more hints tomorrow if I get any time!
West Side Story is the other musical of which I'd been thinking, but I don't know that any of its songs have titles that fit.
I don't know it very well, but my guess is West End Girls is 7.
Let's take a look and see which way we need to go from here:
1) East Bound and Down - Jerry Reed
2) "Put your faith in a miracle, and it's non-denominational"
3) "It was New Cross Station, I was going on home"
4) The Downeaster 'Alexa' - Billy Joel
5) "I get the same old dream same time every night"
6) "Why do the white gulls call?"
7) West End Girls - Pet Shop Boys
8) "Together we will love the beach, together we will learn and teach"
9) King of Wishful Thinking - Go West
10) "Over and over again, you're a fool-hearted man"
11) "Hundreds of flowers in full bloom, hundreds of people in each room"
12) Only a Northern Song - The Beatles
13) "The iron ore poured, as the years passed the door"
14) North to Alaska - Johnny Horton
15) "Now the weight of intention carried the motion"
16) "Learned how to cry too young, so now I live to sing"
17) "Let’s show them Canada still cares"
18) "Got your hands full now, baby, oh as soon as I hit the door"
19) "And a little bit of raving madness"
20) Southern Man - Neil Young
21) Southern Cross - Crosby, Stills & Nash
22) "Gonna make some front page news"
23) Song of the South - Alabama
24) Southern Nights - Glen Campbell
25) South City Midnight Lady - The Doobie Brothers
26) It Never Rains in Southern California - Albert Hammond
27) "But the days of our youth were numbered"
28) South Side of the Sky - Yes
29) "First there came four pretty daughters"
30) The South's Gonna Do It Again - The Charlie Daniels Band
And two bonuses, the first from Yitzchak and the second from me:
B1) "O the sun was in their eyes"
B2) "She's so mean, but I don't care"
I do have a song from *another* musical which fits the theme!
Maybe 8? Just a guess.
