Musical Monday #126

Welcome to the 126th edition of Musical Monday, the weekly quiz that Soccer Dad and I alternate hosting. As always, the challenge is to identify the title and artist of each song quote below, as well as the common theme of the entire set of songs.

There's a single theme this week, though the last couple of songs relate to it somewhat differently than the rest.

1) "The whole world looks upon the sight"
2) "I am tired of this devil"
3) "What we need to survive, together alive"
4) "Don't forget what your good book said"
5) "I go to the movie, and I go downtown"
6) "Won't you please excuse my frankness"
7) "A butcher, a banker, a drummer and then"
8) "Now some of us would rather cuss and make a fuss"
9) "I have wants and desires just like you"
10) "I seen you walkin' down in Chinatown"
11) "I've worked on jobs with my feet and my hands"
12) "Momma she worked so hard to earn every penny"
13) "The man in the silk suit hurries by"
14) "The light bulb's gettin' dim, there's meltdown in the sky"
15) "Walk me down to school, baby, everybody's acting deaf and blind"
16) "His patience's long, but soon he won't have any"
17) "But he never did like to talk about it all that much"
18) "I can't pay no doctor bill"
19) "He don’t like dreads, he thinks we’re all crooks"
20) "Well you know your cat has nine lives babe"
21) "Is finally, and permanently, discredited, and abandoned"
22) "Like a starry summer night, or a snow covered winter's day"
23) "Be grateful that it doesn't last all year!"
24) "One man betrayed with a kiss"
25) "Didn't they try to find some good for you and me?"

Good luck and enjoy!

1 - Black and White - Three Dog Night
3 - Ebony and Ivory - Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder
4 - Southern Man - Neil Young
17 - Hurricane - Bob Dylan

It loooks like these songs all deal with racial issues, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

"Is The Way it is in there?"

#13 sounds kind of like that one to me. The next line, I think, would be something about "catches a poor old lady's eye".

TRN - Elie has included quite a few Tom Lehrer songs over the course of MM! (I think)

Clayton - that's the one I thought too, but I didn't know the next line ...

Some songs that might be there:

For what it's worth - Buffalo Springfield
Ball of confusion - The Temptations
What's Goin' on - Marvin Gaye

It's pretty clear that Blowin' in the wind and The times they are a-changin' are not here. (i.e. I don't recognize lyrics to either song.)

Just a guess, 2 is Black or White by Michael Jackson?

If not, maybe Yitzchak's first bonus is?

For what it's worth, I don't recognize any of the lyrics of For What It's Worth.

Great job, Clayton, Laura, Benjie, Soccer Dad, TRN, Gail, Tova, and Yitzchak! The theme was indeed songs associated with the Civil Rights movement, racism, and/or Dr. Martin Luther King, in honor of Dr. King's birthday, which was being celebrated on the date of the post. Note, I kept the theme rather narrow and so did not include songs about peace, love, and brotherhood in general (like some suggested in the comments), but only those that specifically related to black/white relations.
