Musical Monday #102
Welcome to the 102nd edition of Musical Monday, the weekly quiz that Soccer Dad and I alternate hosting. As always, the challenge is to identify the title and artist of each song quote below, as well as the common theme of the entire set of songs.
The obvious theme for this edition would have been the moon, in honor of today's 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. However - with what was clearly a "lunatic" lack of foresight - I already used up that theme a bit over over a year ago, for MM #48. Oh well, no use mooning over lost opportunities.
Getting back to today's MM, there are three groups of songs (1-28, 29-37, 38-53) with separate sub-themes, each of which contributes to the overall theme (which does have some timeliness, though much less directly than the moon landing!) I'll also note although the three sub-themes are distinct, there is:
- One song in the second group which would also fit the first group
- One song in the third group which would also fit the second group
- And another song in the third group which would fit all three groups!
1) "You don't need a penny just to hang around"
2) "In the pool halls, the hustlers and the losers"
3) "It was always cold, no sun shine"
4) "And if you'd care to take a dare"

13) "Though your hurt is gone, mine's hanging on inside"
14) "Believe in your brother, have faith in man"
15) "You got to hidey-hidey-hide"
16) "She could drag me over the rainbow"
17) "The queen of Corona"

38 Comments:
1) But if you've got a quarter won't you lay your money down?
(I hope I remembered that correctly.)
Down on the Corner - CCR.
2) Down on Main Street - Bob Seger
29) Under my thumb - The Rolling Stones
40) The Land Down Under - Men at Work.
I was going to guess adverbs based on the first three .... but maybe it's more specific (and perhaps ironic given the intro.)
9. Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me - Elton John
24. Get Down Tonight -
39. How Can You Mend a Broken Heart - BeeGees
44) Please Mr. Please - Olivia Newton John
I focused too much on song titles for the 3rd group. I know what it is now. Especially with Gail getting 39.
12. Maybelline--Chuck Berry
32. Born under a bad sign--Cream (Original by Albert King?)
46. All I can do is quote more of the lyrics - I don't know the title or artist:
Gonna have fun in the city,
be with my girl she's so pretty,
she looks fine tonight,
she is out of sight to me...
Note to Yitzchak and all: #12 is a different song, but the lyric I chose is almost exactly the same as one from "Maybelline". Sorry for that! I usually double-check that I'm not using ambiguous lyrics, but in this case since it wasn't 100% the same, google would not have caught it.
So here's a replacement lyric for song #12:
"Underneath the hood is smoke"
6) Don't Let Me Down, The Beatles
17) Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard, Simon and Garfunkel
24) Get Down Tonight
31) Under the Bridge, Red Hot Chili Peppers
First group seems to be Down. Second group is perhaps Under?
a "lunatic" lack of foresight
This cracked me up.
So, Down Under, and Australian artists, it seems. I'm afraid I don't know, however, the timely significance of the theme being Australia.
I do like the subgroup themes that were chosen to describe the overall theme, the first two forming a phrase together with the third regarding artist origin.
I too thought the third group was going to be another word describing placement, and I like the way the similarity of the themes of the first two groups faked me out until the idea that the third would not follow began to form.
15. Old Man down the Road--John Fogarty
16. Down by the River--Neil Young
24. Get Down Tonight is by KC and the Sunshine Band
25. Been down so long? Doors?
34. Over Under Sideways Down--Yardbirds
49. The group is Midnight Oil, I think. The chorus begins "The time has come/to say fair's fair." Don't know what the title is.
2.Down on Mainstreet-Bob Seger
6.Don't let me down-The Beatles
17.Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard-Simon and Garfunkel
19.I'm Going Down-Bruce Springsteen
21.The Fire Down Below-Bob Seger
24.Get Down Tonight-KC and the Sunshine Band
32.Born Under a Bad Sign-Cream
33.Under Pressure-Queen and David Bowie
So if 6 is Don't Let me Down - rule of thumb with Musical Mondays - Laura knows the Beatles stuff, collectively and individually - and Elie is being nice - that's his nature - then 5 is Don't Bring me Down - ELO.
20) I won't back Down - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
30) Under the Boardwalk - The Drifters
3 - Running Down a Dream - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
4 - The Devil Went Down to Georgia - The Charlie Daniels Band
10 - Right Down the Line - Gerry Rafferty
12 - Rockin' Down the Highway - The Doobie Brothers
23 - Burning Down the House - Talking Heads
26 - Down to the Waterline - Dire Straits
41 - Lonesome Loser - Little River Band
43 - Jessie's Girl - Rick Springfield
49 - Beds Are Burning - Midnight Oil
Given today's 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing, I'm going to guess that the theme is in honor of the Parkes Observatory in Australia. It was their radio telescope dish which received the TV pictures of the first steps taken onto the surface of the moon.
37. Under the Sea - The Little Mermaid
38 - You Shook Me All Night Long - AC/DC
20.I Won't Back Down-Tom Petty
5.Don't Bring Me Down-ELO
29.Under My Thumb-The Rolling Stones
30.Under the Boardwalk-The Drifters
40.The Land Down Under-Men at Work
45. This is a guess, but "I am Woman" by Helen Reddy?
You can bend but never break me
Cause that only serves to make me
More determined to achieve my final goal ...
You're right Yitz. She's also an Aussie.
Still thinking about #46. The title might be "Friday on My Mind." No clue on the name of the group though.
16.Down by the River-Neil Young
35 - Under My Wheels - Alice Cooper
In the third section are there any XTC songs? Any Andy Gibbs?
I'm guessing that there's no Keith Urban though. (He's the guy who's now married to Nicole Kidman. He's also a very popular country singer.)
Yes to XTC, no to Andy Gibb. Don't know why I thought to use his brothers, but not him!
I have heard of Keith Urban, but didn't know he was Aussie.
Whoops, when you wrote "XTC" I read it as "INXS" ("In Excess"). No XTC; are they Aussie? Wikipedia says they're British.
Maybe he is by Aus-mosis...
Whoops, I meants INXS.
I can't keep all this newfangled music straight. Sorry about that.
I figure that most country musicians don't come from down under. Keith Urban is an exception.
Here's what's what so far:
1) Down on the Corner - CCR
2) (Down on) Mainstreet - Bob Seger

51) "Lower the curtain down in Memphis"
52) "A winter palace from the Arabian Nights"
53) "You're the sun who makes me shine"
In the interests of historical accuracy, I have to amend my guess regarding the theme. While the majority of the moon broadcast was relayed through the Parkes Obervatory, the first few minutes, including the first steps, were received at the Honeysuckle Creek tracking station, which is also located in Australia.
on 18 july 1984, 25 years ago this week, australlia won the america cup - and their theme song was "Down Under". it was a major event in the australlian conscience -
Benjie
Doesn't U2 have a collection of hits called "Under a blood red sky?" Is it based on a lyric or on a song title?
I don't think that "Undercover Angel" is one of the under songs.
Isn't "under a blood red sky" a line from the song New Years Day?
48 - Devil Inside - INXS
Great job all guessing both the theme, Down + Under + Australian artists = Australia, and most of the songs. I'm so late on these answers, but first I have to give Clayton and Benjie special credit, as both of your guesses for the relevance of the theme were far cleverer/better than my real reason! The latter was simply a random fact I came across recently, that Australia first became part of the British Commonwealth in 1907. It clicked that 1907 was 102 years ago, and I was working on MM #102! Again, I like both "wrong" reasons better than the right one!
