Musical Monday #96

Welcome to the 96th edition of Musical Monday, the weekly quiz that Soccer Dad and I alternate hosting. As always, the challenge is to identify the title and artist of each song quote below, as well as the common theme of the entire set of songs.

The two groups of songs today (1-10, 11-42) are distinct sub-themes, but both relate to an overall theme.

Wow, this is a tough one.

I'm thinking that 36 is Crying by Ray Orbison (remade, I think, by Art Garfunkel.)

And is 1) 96 Tears by Question Mark and the Mysterians?

7) Tracks of my tears - Linda Ronstadt - I'd mention the other guy who's famous for the song, but this is Elie's Musical Monday.
8) Tears of a Clown - Smokey Robinson and the Miracles.
And I'm guessing that 3) is As tears go by by the Rolling Stones.
(but I'm not at all certain.)

42 is "I'll Be" by Edwin McCain. The rest of the line is "I'll be your crying shoulder," but I don't think it's part of the title.

At 6/8/09, 1:45 PM, Blogger Elie said...

SJ, I checked on Wikipedia and you're right about #42 - though multiple lyrics sites I visited did include the "Your Crying Shoulder" as part of the title. Guess I'll have to fall back on "close enough for Jazz" (or Alternative Rock as the case may be!)

11.I'll Cry Instead-The Beatles

5) 6) & 10) remain from the "Tears" songs.

I realize that Jackson Browne sang "Here come those tears again," so, assuming that it is one of those three songs, I'm going to guess that 10) sounds most like Jackson Browne lyrics. (Though since the song, I believe, in memory his first wife, 5) would seemingly be a good guess.)

Oops! Sorry, I forgot the Jackson Browne song. So #10 is something else. A small hint: none of us have likely heard it in a long while, though it was once played quite a bit, along with a better-known companion song.

Is "No more tears" by Barbara Streisand and Donna Summers in there?

If so I'd have to guess 6)

Based on a hint in an e-mail from Elie, I figured out that there's an Obligatory Tusk Song TM in this list. That would be

Never make me cry - Fleetwood Mac.

I can't be certain, but right now I'm thinking that it's 15)

Thanks as always for the summary, Clayton!

Guess again on the OTS (tm) - yes, it's there, but not #15!

Other possibilities:

Cry to Me, Solomon Burke
Cry Cry Cry, Johnny Cash

How'd I mess that up?

31) Never make me cry - Fleetwood Mac

Sorry Clayton!
:-(

At 6/12/09, 3:18 PM, Blogger Elie said...

Here are hints for some of the remaining ones:

#10, as I implied earlier, has likely not had much airplay in a number of years - almost two dozen to be exact. It was counterpart to a song that was played (back then) much more than this song was, at least around these parts.

#13 is by an artist who's in the first group as well

#15, is so not from Tusk ( :-) ), that in fact it's by an artist who passed away almost a decade before Tusk was released.

#24 is by a group who had only one album, but a great one it was!

#29 is not a rock/pop song, but it's one I would guess most of us have heard anyway. Also note commonalities of several previous songs on the list.

#37-38 are two of the oldest songs on the list.

Keep trying - I'll hold the answers 'till Sunday or Monday!

Is 13) I'm so happy I can't stop crying by Sting. (He also did a country version with Toby Keith.)

This is a complete stab in the dark, as I don't think I know the song, but:

24 - Had to Cry Today - Blind Faith - ?

Two more guesses:

37 - Crying in the Chapel - Elvis
38 - Crying in the Rain - The Everly Brothers

Three for three Clayton - wow!

The answer to the bonus was "(I'm gonna cry cry cry) All the way home"
by Nigel Tufnel and David St. Hubbins pre-Spinal Tap.

Yitzchak: Did you know there was a new Spinal Tap album released last week?

Clayton, I didn't, but I see it is mostly remakes of the songs from the movie.

Great job, Soccer Dad, Yitzchak, TRN, Clayton, Laura, Gail, SJ, and new player Staying Afloat! You jointly ID'ed 29 out of 42 songs, as well as the theme, which was tears and crying. There were plenty of those, many more than 96, at Shalom's high school graduation, the day before I posted this!

The full set of answers:
1) "And when the sun comes up, I'll be on top"
- "96 Tears", ? and the Mysterians
2) "Time can bend your knee"
- "Tears In Heaven", Eric Clapton
3) "I want to hear the children sing"

10) "Seems like overnight, we see the world in a different light"
- "Tears Are Not Enough", Northern Lights - the Canadian counterpart to "We Are The World". Thought my "two dozen years" hint would give this away. Pretty cool video though - gotta love Geddy Lee!
