Musical Monday #94

Welcome to the 94th edition of Musical Monday, the weekly quiz that Soccer Dad and I alternate hosting. As always, the challenge is to identify the title and artist of each song quote below, as well as the common theme of the entire set of songs.

Couple of notes/ground rules for today's edition:
- There are three sub-groups of songs - 1-10, 11-29, and 30-50. These all relate to the same theme, but in a different manner, or perhaps to a different extent.
- Although I often select topics with a particular relevance to either current events or the number of the MM edition, there is no such (intended) connection this time.
- For each song below, I'm intending a particular version - generally, but not necessarily, the most famous/well known.
- There is an extra credit item to identify, besides title and artist, for each song below. Once the theme is guessed, the extra credit assignment should be clear, though getting the answers will definitely be easier for some of them, harder for others.

Hm. I had a theory that all songs in the first group had numbers in the title, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

I have an idea for the extra-credit portion of the game, though. Is it to identify the real names of the artists? If so:

4 - Marvin Lee Aday (later legally changed to Meat Loaf)
6 - J.P. Richardson

11 - Reginald Dwight (legally changed to Elton Hercules John)
12 - Vince Furnier
13 - Richard Starkey
15 - Declan MacManus ("international art thief")
17 - Cass Elliot

30 - Robert Zimmerman
32 - Stephen Morris
33 - Eddie Mahoney

Little Richard's real name is Richard Penniman.

Just to confirm, Dobie Grey sang Drift Away.

Carole King was, I believe, originally Carole Klein.

If you're going to San Francisco was sung by Scott Mackenzie. It was written by John Phillips (of the Mamas and the Papas.)

Good going all! Anyone care to take a stab at defining the three subcategories?

Is it something to do with how the stage names relate to the real names?

At 5/25/09, 10:53 PM, Anonymous Clayton said...

I think #28 is called "Suddenly". I'm not sure of the singer -- I'm thinking of James Ingram, or someone with a similar voice.

Do the subcategories have something to do with the songwriters? In the 2nd group, Soccer Dad noted that "Dream a Little Dream of Me" was written by John Phillips. Elton John co-wrote most all of his songs with Bernie Taupin, and "Veronica" was co-written by Elvis Costello and Paul McCartney. Of the 3rd group, I know of 4 that were written by their respective singers.

Mama Cass Elliot's real name was not Cass Elliot. She first took on the name Cass Elliot, and then also became known as Mama Cass. The latter, in her case, was not really a separate name change.

The second group seems to be full name changes, while the third is a change only of last name. The first group appears to be names that are obviously not real names and mostly not even in a format of a real name, though some of the first names in the second group are also obviously made up and not even common nicknames.

Mama Cass Elliot is in the second group, and she didn't use Mama Cass as her actual name instead of Cass Elliot, so Elie is probably looking for her original name.

Cat Stevens of course changed his name again to an Islamic name, and now is going by just the first name of that new name. But it doesn't look like the second group generally concerns name changes that took place in the middle of an established career.

Incidentally, Chubby Checker's choice of name was inspired by Fats Domino.

trn: re. the 3rd group. I think John Denver changed his full name. His real name was Henry something; I can't recall the last name but I think it ended in "dorfer".

Is #23 "Queen of Hearts" by Juice Newton?

At 5/26/09, 4:39 AM, Blogger Soccer Dad said...

Thanks Clayton.

I was thinking female singer, early 70's. And was going to guess Joni Mitchell. So thanks for preventing me from making a fool of myself. But you're right, it's Queen of Hearts by Juice Newton (and the original by Dave Edmonds, I think.)

I haven't looked over everything carefully, but there are also folks like Gene Simmons (Chaim Witz), Gedy Lee (Gary Lieberman) and Peter Wolf (I think his last name is Blankenship, or something like that.)

BTW, are there any songs here by Frances Gumm?

One last note, it's interesting that the song by Elton Hercules John - thanks Clayton - is about someone else who adopted a new name. (Johnny Rivers who sang "Secret Agent Man" - they're giving you a number and take away your name - also has a real name.)

At 5/26/09, 8:10 AM, Blogger Soccer Dad said...

I'm not sure what Cass Elliott's real name was. I'm thinking Naomi Cohen but am uncertain. (The family name Friedman occurred to me as she had a cousin in my class.)

Cat Stevens is originally Romanian. But I forget his last name. Though the family is originally Christian his brother lived in Israel for a while with his family.

I don't know if this has anything to do with her last name, but Crystal Gayle is the half sister of Loretta Lynn.

And did you know that David Brian of Bon Jovi left off his last name, Rashbaum? Come to think of it Bon Jovi is a changed name too.

Gene Simmons (Chaim Witz), Gedy Lee (Gary Lieberman)I didn't include band members, just solo artists, so Geddy Lee, Freddie Mercury, the members of Kiss and The Ramones, etc. won't be here.

Johnny Rivers (Ramistella) is one I missed though, and so is Frances Gumm AKA Judy Garland!

re. the 3rd group. I think John Denver changed his full name. His real name was Henry somethingActually John is his original middle name, so (assuming TRN's definitions are correct :-) ) he does fit group three.

Great job, TRN, Clayton, Yitzchak, Gail, Laura, Soccer Dad, Benjie, and new player draftervoi! You jointly ID'ed 40 out of 50 songs, as well as the theme, which was singers who recorded under pseudonyms. The three sub-groups were basically as detailed by TRN:
1) Stage names which don't sound like real names at all
2) Singers who changed both first and last names
3) Singers who kept their real first (or middle) name and just changed their last.

What I chose not to count as pseudonyms:
- Singers who simply used their real (birth) first and/or middle names as their stage name - e.g., Cher, Donovan, Prince, Madonna, Rihanna...
- Singers who kept their real last name and just changed their first name (too many to list)
- Members of groups (Bono, Geddy Lee, Freddie Mercury, etc.)

Another interesting factoid I learned through researching this edition, is that several female performers who I had always thought has adopted stage names, were simply using their married last names – e.g., Pat Benatar, Donna Summer, Faith Hill.

The full set of correct answers, along with the birth name (or last name for group three) of each artist, will be posted in the next comment!
