Musical Monday #90

Welcome to the 90th edition of Musical Monday, the weekly quiz that Soccer Dad and I alternate hosting. Speaking of which, if you haven't already, please check out last week's MM #89 at Soccer Dad - it's one of the best ones either of us has done so far, and there are still a good few song clues to guess!

Back to this week's, somewhat more workaday MM. As always, the challenge is to identify the title and artist of each song quote below, as well as the common theme of the entire set of songs. Note that there are three groups of songs today, 1-24, 25-27, and 28-30. Each group has its own separate sub-theme, which together represent clues to the overall theme of this week's MM, as well as - hopefully - illuminating the reason/timing for its selection.

1) "Alone in your electric chair"
2) "Look, what's your game baby?"
3) "You've done all the taking, it's your turn to give"
4) "I wanna tell you a story every man oughta know"
5) "They drove you or you drove them crazy"
6) "But I must admit it got the best of me"
7) "It ain't no use in calling out my name, gal"
8) "You've been as constant as a Northern Star"
9) "Make future plans, don't dream about yesterday"
10) "My head was in a bad place"
11) "Quarter moon walking through the Milky Way"
12) "Far too many sins to mention"
13) "Comes to a fix, not afraid to fight"
14) "We were lying together in a silver lining"
15) "I need a little heart and affection, cause love needs a little romance"
16) "So you think your schooling's phoney"
17) "Whisper to me softly, breathe words upon my skin"
18) "And I was in crazy motion till you calmed me down"
19) "You missed two classes and no homework"
20) "When you're alone and in a corner"
21) "I never was much good at coming on real strong"
22) "Think about the love that burns within my heart for you"
23) "When I come home baby, now (night and day)"
24) "Your friends tell you there's no future in loving a married man"

25) "Blinky thumps the gut bass, and solos for a while"
26) "He sees everything and nothing at all"
27) "Count all the bees in the hive"

28) "I don't know why my heart flips, I only know it does"
29) "Now I'm playing it real straight, and yes I cut my hair"
30) "I wandered the highways from Dublin to Berkeley"

Good luck and enjoy!

1) I was about to write "Don't let the sun go down on me," but then I realized there's another "electric chair" song:
"You may be right," Billy Joel

5) I think is by Carly Simon, but I'm blanking on the song. My brother pointed out yesterday that I'm fast approaching 50, memory is the first thing, whatever.

8) "Right down the line," Gerry Rafferty

I guess that the first group is for RIGHT thinking people.

24) If loving you is wrong, I don't want to be right - Barbara Mandrell, Gladys Knight (I think) and others.

7) Don't think twice it's all right
Dylan, Turtles

(This is a guess, I'm not convinced that I'm correct.)

2. "Alright Now"--Free
Soccer Dad is correct about 7.
"Well Alright" by Buddy Holly is probably in there someplace, and also "You're right, I'm left, she's gone" by Elvis (if I have the title correct).

17) Well I guessed correctly once, so "Right time of the night," Jennifer Warner (or is it Warnes)?

And is "I'm alright" by Kenny Loggins in there anyplace? Maybe 18?

At 4/27/09, 2:09 PM, Blogger Elie said...

I didn't use "alright" titles, only ones where the two words were separated ("all right"). The latter is the case for #2, but not the others asked about.

At 4/27/09, 2:30 PM, Blogger Elie said...

My last comment was not 100% accurate - sorry! More specifically:

"All Right Now" and "Don't think twice it's all right" are there, as "right" stands alone in those official titles.

"I'm alright" and "well alright", or any other titles with the single word "alright", were not used.

I'm changing my "Right Time of the Night" ID from 17 to 11.

7) Don't Think Twice, It's All Right, Bob Dylan

23) This song was performed on The Cosby Show. The "night and day" part is a refrain sung by the back-up singers.

23) The identification of the "right" sub-theme helped me recall more of the lyrics, and I am thinking the title might be something like The Night Time is the Right Time.

At 4/27/09, 9:46 PM, Blogger trn said...

The first two sub-themes are "right" and "corner," and this is Musical Monday #90, so I think the theme has something to do with right, that is, ninety-degree, angles.

At 4/27/09, 11:05 PM, Blogger Soccer Dad said...

Very impressive TRN!

So maybe the last three are "angle" songs.

At 4/28/09, 12:46 AM, Blogger Yitzchak Goodman said...

trn,

If 23 is "The Night Time is the Right Time," then the artist is CCR I believe.

At 4/28/09, 3:53 PM, Blogger trn said...

Thanks, Soccer Dad.

Actually, I've been thinking the last three songs might be "square" songs. "Corner" kinda covers the "angle" aspect, doesn't it? The corners of squares, however, are right angles. Once I thought of "square," I thought of Hip to be Square.

29) This seems like it could be Hip to be Square.

The song I have in mind, Yitzchak, or at least the version I know, the one from The Cosby Show, was not in the style of classic rock.

Thanks for the list, Clayton! Of the missing ones, the easiest, I believe, are 3, 9, and 10.

I thought that 15 sounded like "Lotta Love" by one of Linda Ronstadt's friends. (I forget her name, but I think it started with an "L.") Obviously that's not correct.

And every time I think that Maxine Nightengale's song is "Right back where we started from," I realize that "right" isn't part of the title.

Isn't there a disco song with a title something like "Take Your Time, Do It Right"? But I don't know who sings it, nor enough (any) of the other lyrics to recognize it if it's here...
