Musical Monday #78

Welcome to the 78th edition of Musical Monday, the weekly quiz that Soccer Dad and I alternate hosting. As always, the challenge is to identify the title and artist of each song quote below, as well as the common theme of the entire set of songs.

With 77 MMs now behind us, some degree of repetition is bound to crop up. So I'll confess that today's theme is a sort of a second cousin to one I did a while back, with a few of the same songs - though using different quotes! Extra credit if you can ID the previous, slightly related theme. Also, I'll note that songs #34-36 on today's bend the rules somewhat, while #37 fits the theme very well, but in a different way than the rest of them.

1) "And I say I don't know"
2) "I don't care what the neighbors say"
3) "But you still mystify"
4) "What does it matter to ya?"
5) "Sometimes it's not for days"
6) "And the front rank died"
7) "Take my arms that I might reach you"
8) "I'll taste all that love that you've been hiding"
9) "You're like a fresh morning dew"
10) "You say I'm tough and kind of wild"
11) "My heart was captured, my soul surrendered"
12) "Exactly whom I'm supposed to be"
13) "Into your arms I fell so unaware"
14) "Respectfully, I say to thee"
15) "Simple though love is, still it confused me"
16) "From the profit he's made on your dreams"
17) "So why on earth should I moan?"
18) "Leave me never"
19) "Like the tick-tick-tock of the stately clock"
20) "We learn to give each other what we need to survive"
21) "We'll have a dance of liberty"
22) "They print my message in the Saturday sun"
23) "I turn my back and you're messin' around"
24) "I never cared for school or any golden rules"
25) "I like my bands in business suits"
26) "Movin' in for the kill tonight"
27) "But as quick as a flash your love is gone"
28) "Susanne the plans they made put an end to you"
29) "And the people who gain the world and lose their soul"
30) "Through the storm we reach the shore"
31) "It's enough to leave me crying in the rain"
32) "Young and wired, set to explode in the heat"
33) "That certain kind of love that moves all doubts"
34) "Loading crates down on the dock"
35) "You see, Andy didn't have many friends"
36) "Cut you down to size"
37) "I swear it's not too late!"

Good luck and enjoy!

sort of a second cousin

Cute!

17) A Hard Day's Night, The Beatles

28) Fire and Rain, James Taylor

37) Turn, Turn, Turn, The Byrds (Kohelet)

4) Live and let die - Wings
8) Sooner or Later - The Grass Roots
20) Runnin' on Empty - Jackson Browne
35) The night the lights went out in Georgia - Vicki Lawrence, Reba McEntire

Note on #20 - although Running On Empty does have a somewhat similar lyric, it's not the song quoted.

13. Love is Here and Now You're Gone (that might not be the actual title) - The Supremes

14. Can't remember the title - from the 80s, sung by Diana Ross...?

I know that I know several more, but I just can't quite get them...

2 - Good Times Bad Times - Led Zeppelin
6 - Us and Them - Pink Floyd
14 - Upside Down - Diana Ross
31 - Love You Inside Out - The Bee Gees

Looks like the theme is opposites. 37 fits because, while there is no opposition in the title as in the rest (at least through #33, I assume), the lyrics are all oppposites ("a time to love, a time to hate", etc.)

Ah, so it is the second cousin of the "or" part of the edition regarding choices and making up your mind around election day? That was the one in which Live and Let Die, which has been identified here, didn't fit because it isn't Live or Let Die.

The Sound of Silence? I think so.

I think so too. It took me a while, but now I can hear it. ("Might" becomes two syllables.)

It occurred to me that Cruel to be Kind would be in the list. On reflection I think that #3 would Cruel to be Kind by Nick Lowe.

So the question is: Does "Hurt so good" fit and if it does, is it included.

Given the nature of lyrics for country music, I figured you'd have lots of country songs that fit. I can only think of one right now, and even that's not a perfect fit.

At 1/26/09, 10:47 PM, Blogger Elie said...

I thought about "Hurts So Good" but decided those were not quite opposites. As for Country songs, since I have little knowledge of that genre, I'm sure I missed lots of good ones. Please feel free to add ones you think of!

So Elie confirmed that Black and White is there. I haven't figured it out yet, but it occurred to me that another 3 Dog Night song would be included.

I'm guessing 29 is Easy to be Hard.

Not that I recall the lyrics, but that the lyrics would seem to fit the title (and, I think, the meter.)

There's a song with a title that is something like Short Skirt, Long Jacket. I'm not familiar with the words.

What about Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah?

The first I'm not familiar with, but it would have fit! As for the latter, I was sort of stingy/idiosyncratic in what I chose count as opposites - e.g., I also omitted the many songs that include "you" and "I"/"me".

And a couple of hints (?):
- 21 and 22, 29 and 30, and 32 and 33 are all pairs, particularly the latter
- 26-28 are a trio

Ah, the clues help.

22 could be Black or White by Michael Jackson, but I don't know any of the words besides the title lyric.

33 is With or Without You by, I think, U2.

For 27, I'm trying think of other titles that begin with Fire. It could be a duplicate title, or the opposite in this case be, hmm, water?

Sorry, I used the wrong number.

30 is With or Without You, not 33.

I've told Elie that I expect there are a lot country songs that fit the bill. However I haven't recalled that many. Here's one. And if you know recent country music, the lyric may well give you a hint to the artist. (Not the one mentioned!)

The worn out tape of Chris LeDoux, lonely women and bad booze

Great job, TRN, Soccer Dad, Gail, Clayton, Laura, Yitzchak, Benjie, SJ, and ral315! Together, you ID'ed all but 8 of the 37 songs, and Clayton was first to get the theme(s), song titles containing opposites. No real obvious relevance to the posting date, though today we will shortly get to see the most promoted, if not the most interesting, sporting opposition of the year.

As I stated above, I was a bit strict in what I considered fair game for this theme, but also missed quite a few good ones anyway. So good job, all those who added to the original list! Here are the solutions to mine, I'll leave the bonus quotes up to their originators:
1)"And I say I don't know"
- "Hello Goodbye", Beatles
2) "I don't care what the neighbors say"
- "Good Times, Bad Times", Led Zeppelin
3) "But you still mystify"

5) "Sometimes it's not for days"

- "The Sounds Of Silence", S&G
8) "I'll taste all that love that you've been hiding"
- "Sooner Or Later", The Grass Roots
9) "You're like a fresh morning dew"
- "You're the First, the Last, My Everything", Barry White
10) "You say I'm tough and kind of wild"
