Musical Monday #56

Welcome to the 56th edition of Musical Monday, the weekly quiz that Soccer Dad and I alternate hosting. Actually, this week's MM is another collaboration between us both, and with two contributors we were able to put together a Supersized edition, a full 56 songs to match the quiz number!

There's a single theme this week, but also meaningful breaks between songs 1-2 and songs 15-16.

1. "I never thought it would happen, I feel quite the same"

2. "Now I spend my time just making rhymes of yesterday"
3. "You act like you never had love"
4. "You seem so far away though you are standing near"
5. "Easy as 1 2 3"
6. "I'm dirty, mean and mighty unclean"
7. "You know she's got me on some other kind of highway"
8. "Magically bored on a quiet street corner"
9. "Not my brand you understand"
10. "Done up in blue print blue"
11. "Took all I had and then she fed me dirt"
12. "I think I know some things we never outgrow"
13. "Friend only to the undertaker"
14. "If you tear yourself in two again"
15. "Just show your face, in broad daylight"

16. "But every now and then I feel so insecure"
17. "I get up, and nothing gets me down"
18. "Like a cat and a mouse (cat and a mouse)"
19. "The night is coming and the starling flew for days"
20. "I've seen old men crying at their own grave sides"
21. "Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like cherry-cola"
22. "I had no reason to be over optimistic"
23. "You don't have to worry I'm such a happy man"
24. "And the union don’t mind"
25. "They read in the press all about your success"
26. "She’s got a dime all of the time"
27. "Oh, so lonesome for you"
28. "And all I can taste is this moment"
29. "I say I don't like it, but you know I'm a liar"
30. "You've been living like a little girl, in the middle of your little world"
31. "The way you swerve and curve, really wrecks my nerves"
32. "She broke my heart but I love her just the same now"
33. "That a man must break his back to earn his day of leisure?"
34. "Give me time I'll make you forget the rest"
35. "What you like is in the limo"
36. "So shy, like a child who had grown"
37. "I'm weak and I've gone hazy"
38. "This summer I hear the drumming"
39. "Well, how can you, you're stuck in four walls"
40. "You missed the starting gun"
41. "Jump in the shower and the blood starts pumpin'"
42. "When the sun shines they slip into the shade"
43. "Dallas, Texas, Hollywood"
44. "Why don't you ask him if he's going away?"
45. "Her maiden name was Musik til she met that Jackson boy"
46. "Please, please listen to me children"
47. "...young man, put your pride on the shelf"
48. "Oh, it's got me running and I just can't brake"
49. "Seekin' my fame and fortune, lookin' for a pot of gold"
50. "So please believe me, my heart is in your hands"
51. "I can lock all my doors"
52. "I'm so high, I could hear heaven"
53. "And we just can't find the sound"

2. One - Three Dog Night...?
5. ABC - Jackson 5
16. Help - The Beatles
29. Fire - A sister group - can't remember the(ir) name(s)!

Others sound very familiar - but I can't quite get them...

I think I can guess the theme - one word titles.

Just so that further guesses on the theme are not suppressed, I will note that this is not the (fully) correct answer.

It looks like it's not the number of words in the titles that is important, but rather the number of characters. 2-15 appear to all have three-character titles, and 16-56 have four. What does that mean for the theme, though? 34? 3 out of 4? Three-fourths? #1 must give a hint but I don't know what it is...

And if I'd chosen "I'm not a cleaning lady," you'd have known it was Sara too. I forgot we had two "obligatory Tusk songs!"

If I had just chosen just "Young man" as a lyric would you have guessed YMCA too?

At 8/12/08, 5:13 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm not sure I would have gotten YMCA from "young man" alone. I got Sara by accident, sort of - I thought it was one of the other clues and listened to it on the iPod to make sure, and found out which one it really was. I would have gotten it quicker from the "cleaning lady" line since we had talked about that one before.

Clayton: With two collaborators this week there *had* to be two mandatory Tusk songs, of course!

BTW, if you didn't already guess, the reason SD is the one responding to your last few comments is that he supplied the odd-numbered quotes for this MM, and I did the evens. (Didn't realize it earlier but this actually parallels the MM quizzes themselves - I host the even-numbered ones, SD the odds. Neat.)

Great job, Gail, Yitzchak, Laura, Clayton, Sarah, and Pip! Together, you ID'ed 33 out of 56 songs (plus half credit on #22), as well as the theme - more or less. Or should that just be "less", since the theme was, to be precise, songs with very short titles, defined as four characters or less (punctuation not included).
