Musical Monday #46

Welcome to the 46th edition of Musical Monday, the weekly quiz that Soccer Dad and I alternate hosting. Usually alternate, that is; today's is another collaborative effort, so twice the fun for you, and thanks to Soccer Dad for his help!

Though we pause today in the US to remember those who lost their lives in battle to defend our freedom, these MM quizzes require accessing memories of an infinitely more trivial nature - recalling the titles and artists of each song quote, as well as guessing the common theme of the set of songs. However, in deference to the fact that this Monday is specifically a US holiday, I will confirm that today's theme has a US-specific context as well.

Without further ado:

1) "Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees"
2) "She talks kinda lazy"
3) "The dress I ruined with the soda pop"
4) "Her weapons were her crystal eyes"
5) "I got pictures, got candy, I am a lovable man"
6) "Me think of girl constantly"
7) "I always though a fish could not be caught who wouldn't bite"
8) "Oh, won't you come with me and take my hand?"
9) "Brother what a night the people saw"
10) "Have a drink, have a drive"
11) "Take my tears and that's not nearly all"
12) "These people round here wear beaten down eyes"
13) "Que se llama de apellido Vitorino"
14) "And I do my little turn on the catwalk"
15) "Everyone's a Captain Kirk"
16) "When the party was nice, the party was jumpin'"
17) "And now we meet in an abandoned studio"
18) "I often kiss you when there's no one else around"
19) "See your face come peaking through my window"
20) "You've been living like a little girl"
21) "And she feeds me love and tenderness and macaroons"
22) "He drove to the family inn"
23) "I ain't quite as dumb as I seem"
24) "Way on the other side of the Hudson"
25) "And throw 'I love you' echoes down the canyon"
26) "There ain't no good guys"
27) "Our love had wings to fly"

Enjoy and Good Luck!

Great job, Lel, SS, Clayton, draftervoi, Yitzchak and Cruisin-mom! Together, you ID'ed 16 out of 27 songs, and Yitzchak nailed the theme, which was indeed one-hit wonders - on the US charts, to be exact. And as my collaborator Soccer Dad pointed out, this is (ironically!) likely a multi-hit theme; i.e., there are probably enough other one-hit bands we missed this go-round to support the theme a second or third time.

The complete list of correct responses:
1) "Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees"
- "Seasons in the Sun", Terry Jacks
2) "She talks kinda lazy"
- "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)", Edison Lighthouse
3) "The dress I ruined with the soda pop"
- "Beach Baby", First Class
4) "Her weapons were her crystal eyes"
- "Venus", Shocking Blue
5) "I got pictures, got candy, I am a lovable man"
- "Vehicle", The Ides of March
6) "Me think of girl constantly"
- "Louie, Louie", The Kingsmen
7) "I always though a fish could not be caught who wouldn't bite"
- "Afternoon Delight", Starland Vocal Band
8) "Oh, won't you come with me and take my hand?"
- "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida", Iron Butterfly
9) "Brother what a night the people saw"
- "The Night Chicago Died", Paper Lace
10) "Have a drink, have a drive"
- "In The Summertime", Mungo Jerry
11) "Take my tears and that's not nearly all"
- "Tainted Love", Soft Cell
12) "These people round here wear beaten down eyes"
- "Come On Eileen", Dexys Midnight Runners
13) "Que se llama de apellido Vitorino"
- "Macarena", Los Del Rio (ugh, I know, but it does fit the theme!)
14) "And I do my little turn on the catwalk"
- "I'm Too Sexy", Right Said Fred (ditto)
15) "Everyone's a Captain Kirk"
- "99 Red Balloons", Nena (maybe picking this line gave it away, but how could I resist!)
16) "When the party was nice, the party was jumpin'"
- "Who Let the Dogs Out", Baha Men
17) "And now we meet in an abandoned studio"
- "Video Killed the Radio Star" (aka the first ever MTV video), The Buggles
18) "I often kiss you when there's no one else around"
- "Turning Japanese", The Vapors
19) "See your face come peaking through my window"
– "Pictures of Matchstick Men", Status Quo
20) "You've been living like a little girl"
- "Fire", The Crazy World of Arthur Brown
21) "And she feeds me love and tenderness and macaroons"
- "Sweet City Woman", The Stampeders
22) "He drove to the family inn"
- "Third Rate Romance", Amazing Rhythm Aces
23) "I ain't quite as dumb as I seem"
- "How Long?", Ace
24) "Way on the other side of the Hudson"
- "Ariel", Dean Friedman
25) "And throw 'I love you' echoes down the canyon"
- "Please Come To Boston" Dave Loggins
26) "There ain't no good guys"
- "We Just Disagree", Dave Mason
27) "Our love had wings to fly"
– "Sky High", Jigsaw

Thanks again to Soccer Dad for collaborating, and look for MM #47 at his blog this Monday 6/2. MM will then take a week off for the Jewish holiday of Shavous, and be back here with #48 on 6/16.

Three-quarters of these songs I don't know. I like folk and some rock (mainly 60s, but some newer ones too), but I grew up on classical music. My favorite composers include Brahms, Beethoven & Tchaikovsky; I used to hum La Donna e Mobile when I was two (everyone was impressed. I thought it was just a nice tune).
I love to sing (I have my problems with kol isha)and taught my kids most of the zmirot Shabbat. When we're together-which is very rare these days, with four of them living in Israel and the eldest out of my state-we harmonize zmirot on Shabbat and chagim. It sounds beautiful and warms my heart (in the past, friends have even urged us to record a Shabbat zmirot CD. We never did)
So every Musical Monday post of yours, I feel so-ooooo left out!
