Gas Pains
No, this isn't a followup to Jack's whoopee cushion confession. Though actually, I just saw that he was also thinking today about the topic that is bothering me - the record-breaking price of oil, and gasoline prices going correspondingly sky high.
What upsets me even more than the price we're paying, is who is making the money - mostly the same Arab dictatorships, monarchies, and thugocracies that we're should be trying to help overthrow or democratize. And while I agree that we need to look for alternate sources of fuel, and support hybrids and other innovations, I also think of those as mid-to-long term goals. What we should be doing now is reducing the amount of money that we spend on Arab oil any way we can. Which means taking advantage of our own oil fields in Alaska and elsewhere. If this means inconveniencing a few caribou; well, I hate to sound harsh, but that should be a no-brainer. There's a line in tanach somewhere about wicked men that kill people, and kiss calves. There's nothing new under the Sunoco, I guess.

How can you think of inconveniencing caribou? Is it that much more important that you pay a few cents less per gallon or that they get to mate?
(Cute variation on Koheles?)
There is a season for hybrids, turn, turn, turn, turn. ;)
Mirty: Your dogs won't mind?
David and Jack: Since we're quoting Koheles, even though he says "Vakesef yaaneh es hakol" (money answers everything), I actually wouldn't care if the price of gas went up due to drilling in Alaska. I just don't want the money going to Arab despots and US/Israel haters.
Elie,
There is something revolting about paying people who hate us.
