Scotty's Final Beam-Up

Soccer Dad just emailed me that James Doohan, who played Scotty on the classic Star Trek TV and movie series, passed away today at the age of 85. Doohan was a talented man, and created a character that will be an everlasting part of American pop culture - and at the core of my own personal nostalgic/escapist universe. Baruch Dayan Emes.

By the way, the actual phrase "Beam me up, Scotty", in those exact words, was never said on Star Trek. Like "Play it again, Sam" and "one small step for man,..." (Armstrong actually said "one small step for a man,..." - which makes much more sense - but the "a" was lost in transmission), it is one of the great all-time quotes that were never actually spoken!

OK, a correction! Armstrong meant to say "a man", but flubbed the line in the excitement of the moment. NASA later covered for him by claiming the "a" was lost in transmission. See

for the whole story!
