Musical Monday #86
Welcome to the 86th edition of Musical Monday, the weekly quiz that Soccer Dad and I alternate hosting. As always, the challenge is to identify the title and artist of each song quote below, as well as the common theme of the entire set of songs.
This week there are three groups of songs, demarcated by spaces. Each group has a separate theme of its own, which, when taken together, will point to the overall theme of this week's Musical Monday. Yes, I know the middle group contains just one song (#33), but I'm quite sure you clever folks do still have a good chance of solving the puzzle!

8) The Slurpee song.
No.
You can't always get what you want, The Rolling Stones
19) Couldn't get it right, Climax Blues Band
(One of my favorite lyrics of all time!)
40) Secret Agent Man, Johnny Rivers
20) Get Ready - Rare Earth/ The Temptations?
(I'm thinking Temptations is correct, but am uncertain about the song.)
12. Love One Another - or something like that. Can't recall the group.
18. If You Want it, Here it is - Beatles...?
27. Let's Get it On - Marvin Gaye
34. LIve and Let Die - Paul McCartney
4 - I Get Around - The Beach Boys
6 - Got To Get You Into My Life - The Beatles
14 - By The Time I Get To Phoenix - Glenn Campbell
16 - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction - The Rolling Stones
18 - Come and Get It - Badfinger
27 - Let's Get It On - Marvin Gaye
29 - Get Off My Cloud - The Rolling Stones
32 - Why Don't We Get Drunk - Jimmy Buffett
34 - Live and Let Die - Paul McCartney and Wings
Looks like all the songs in the first group have the word "get" in the title...
The last group would be spy songs, or themes from spy entertainment.
12 - Get Together - The Youngbloods
35 - Nobody Does It Better - Carly Simon
8.You Can't Always get what you want-The Rolling Stones
16.Satisfaction-The Rolling Stones
17.When I Get Home-The Beatles
29.Get off my Cloud-The Rolling Stones
37) Would it be "Goldfinger" by Shirley Bassey?
I guess another possibility would be "View to a Kill,"
2) Get Back, The Beatles
TRN, you just beat me on #2. I was surprised that no one - especially Laura - got it. I was surprised that I didn't get it! And when I was ready to post, you got it. Oh well.
:-)
30) We gotta get out of this place - Eric Burdon and the Animals.
Soccer Dad - I think you're right about the 2nd possibility for 37 - "A View To A Kill", by Duran Duran.
1. "Don't get fooled again"--the Who
3. "Can't get enough of your love"--Bad Company (inferior retread of "One of the Boys" by Mott the Hoople)
Clayton,
After the fact I realized that. But what I really meant is that I figured that one of those spy songs (other than 37) was "A view to a Kill."
So thanks for the credit, even if I don't really deserve it.
:-)
Soccer Dad is right about 20.
26. I can build a castle from a single grain of sand--but I can't get next to you? Temps?
36 - For Your Eyes Only - Sheena Easton, I think?
5) Get over it - The Eagles
10 - Can't Get It Out of My Head - ELO
Good going so far, all! Please note, I discovered that most lyrics sites have a somewhat different wording for song #33 than the one I used! So I added an alternate quote above.
9 - You Can't Get What You Want (Till You Know What You Want) - Joe Jackson
I wonder if Get Down Tonight or Get it on the run, Getting Better all the time are included.
Answers: 1) Yes 2) No, not sure I know that one, and 3) No, because I didn't use titles with other forms of the word "get".
Now I know why the hosts are allowed to Google. (I still make mistakes, but fewer!)
:-(
I guess if there aren't other form of "get," that might be a bit of a clue too.
I guess if there aren't other form of "get," that might be a bit of a clue too.
Sure, why not! And here's another, since I'm feeling generous: The pivotal #33 is not a rock song, though it is probably quite familiar to most.
23 - Get Down Tonight - KC and the Sunshine Band
Is "Get a job" one of the "Get" songs?
1.Won't Get Fooled Again-The Who
James Brown has a bunch of titles that include the word "get."
28 - Tryin' To Get the Feeling Again - Barry Manilow
Could 33 be "I shot the Sherriff"?
Could 33 be "I shot the Sherriff"?
It isn't, but you are at least partially on the right track (not in terms of the title).
Will it take a real secret agent to find the theme???
Has anyone guessed or come out and actually mentioned James Bond movies as the theme for the last group? Not sure if someone did and I missed it.
Here's the guess I had. Elie wouldn't say if it was right, but that I shouldn't be shy.
Could the "Get" and the spy theme - not just James Bond - combine to suggest "Get Smart?" That, of course, depends on what #33 is. If "I shot the Sheriff" is on the right track, could it be that the song is by a Marley? What I was thinking was the theme for the cartoon Arthur that's by Ziggy Marley. That wouldn't fit into Get Smart, but it suggests that perhaps Ziggy Marley did other theme songs. Maybe I'm reaching.
Again, I won't yet confirm that conjecture for the theme, but I will say that there is a very important and relevant clue that nobody has noticed yet!
Also, to clarify my response to Yitzchak about "I Shot the Sheriff" being "at least partially on the right track", I meant it in a much looser sense, involving neither the song's artist nor title.
I didn't make the "get smart" connection, but I was thinking along the same lines as you for #33. I listened through the few Bob Marley songs I have, but none of them fit. I'm not sure how many would be "quite familiar to most" as Elie said. Maybe it's not a Bob/Ziggy Marley song, but some other reggae song...?
Just thinking out loud here... I wonder if the number of songs in each group is significant? I just noticed that there are seven (007?) songs in the "spy" group. How important is it (if at all) that one of them is *not* the theme from a James Bond movie?
33 is one third of 99, as in Agent 99?
COINCIDENCE? I think not. :)
Geez, this is starting to remind me of "Paul is Dead" - all these clues you guys are finding that I didn't even intend! (or at least not consciously!).
Here are a couple of final hints:
- When I referred to a "very important and relevant clue" to the theme, it was something similar to one of the last couple of guesses, but much more straightforward.
- I apologize - it seems song #33 wasn't as generally familiar as I assumed! It's not a rock song, though it was popular radio fare, along with other songs by the same artist, in the mid 50s. Its genre is somewhat related to the genre of the song Yitzchak guessed earlier, which is what I meant above by "partially on the right track".
Paul is dead!?!?
How awful, when did this happen?
:-)
If we can only figure out what #33 is and play it backwards, all will become clear...
Here's a list of the guesses so far, in case it will help anyone fill in the remaining blanks.

38) "See him surface in every shadow"
39) "You play with words, you play with love"
40) Secret Agent Man - Johnny Rivers
39) Private Eyes, Hall & Oates
Yitzchak mentioned "Get a Job"; 21 looks a lot like lyrics that might be in it, although I don't remember that particular lyric off-hand.
I'll throw a bonus out there, because this was my first guess when I saw the theme:
B1) "Get it together like your big brother Bob"
Thanks for the list, Clayton! I just noticed that the solution given for #5 (Get Over It by The Eagles) is actually the solution for #22. So #5 ("I ain't got time for true confessions") is still open.
Drat. I listened to "Get over it" twice yesterday and didn't think I'd heard the "True confessions" line. Now I know why.
B1 - Get a Haircut and Get a Real Job - George Thorogood
Not quite sure that's the exact title.
Is anyone familiar with that Get Up Stand Up song?
If the theme is Get Smart, perhaps 33 has a title that contains the word "smart." I can't think of any such song; can anyone else?
Or perhaps the theme regards the plight of agunot and the investigators who track down and leverage recalcitrant husbands.
"Smart" guess, TRN!
Nobody has stated what I thought was the obvious verification of the theme, though I keep hinting! Don't want to totally give it away... but think why the theme is appropriate for this particular edition!
A-ha! Musical Monday #86; Maxwell Smart = Agent 86.
Is anyone familiar with that Get Up Stand Up song?
It's by Bob Marley and the Wailers. I don't think the clues have anything from it, but I could be wrong.
I don't think that 99 by Toto is up there, is it?
It's frustrating because so many of these lyrics are familiar but I can't place the songs.
Great job, Soccer Dad, Gail, Clayton, Laura, TRN, Yitzchak, and ral315! You ID'ed nearly all of the songs, as well as the theme - with just a bit of prompting! Yes, it was Get Smart, in honor of MM #86. And "would you believe?" - I've been wanting to do this one for a while! Too bad I wasn't "smart" enough to find more than one song for "Smart", which made it a good bit harder to guess the theme. Sorry!
